Cats are often infected with a parasite called Toxoplasma. They get it from rodents that they eat as prey. The rodents, when infected with Toxoplasma, become fearless of cats, which increases their chance of being eaten. This is due to a sophisticated molecular mechanism the parasite uses to improve its chance of survival.

 

It turns out that this mechanism targeted at rodents can also disturb the balance of neurotransmitters in humans when they are infected with Toxoplasma. The chance of schizophrenia of a person infected by Toxoplasma is almost triple!
